Nutrition Tips : Type of Diet & Exercise for a Menopausal Woman
Eating Your Way Through Menopause?
I confess. I have terrible eating habits. Especially lately where I've developed the bad habit of eating cookies for breakfast. My once zippy metabolism, which has allowed me to eat with impunity most of my life, no longer runs on the same speed. I've gained five pounds. The sugar triggers hot flashes. I just don't feel that great. And I should know better.
But what if there were certain foods that could help with menopausal symptoms? And what if these foods were also healthy for you? I'm not talking about soy, as the research on soy and hot flashes is inconclusive. But other foods – "cold" fruits and vegetables that allow "your internal air conditioner to kick into action," according to an article in the Huffington Post. Acupuncturist Cathy Margolin explains that in Traditional Chinese Medicine (peri)menopausal symptoms are caused by a kidney yin deficiency; the kidney is the organ responsible for the aging process, and when it is unbalanced, women can get hot flashes and night sweats.
So what foods are nourishing to the kidney and provide nature's air conditioning? Cucumber, cabbage, bok choy, celery, carrots, romaine lettuce. And cold fruits? Lemon, cantaloupe, grapefruit, apples, pears, watermelon and apricots, among others. Eating at least two servings of vegetables and two fruits a day can cool you off, says Margolin. As can consuming bitter foods – kale, green tea, asparagus – which help disperse heat.
There's an entire philosophy of combining cold foods and hot foods and incorporating five flavors explained a bit more in the article, but the part I'm focusing on: eating healthy foods that could help with hot flashes. It's like killing two birds with one stone, though that's really a terrible expression, as I don't want to kill any birds with any stones.
