How to Clean Up After a Dinner Party
When you have finished enjoying your wonderful dinner party, and the guests have all gone home, it is tempting to toss down the last of the wine, fling your shoes in the corner and head straight for bed to enjoy a well-earned rest. The trouble is, all the mess is still there the next morning. Far better to tackle it before you sleep, and it will only add a few more minutes to your evening but it will ensure a must more pleasurable experience on waking up - a clean table and kitchen!
Clear away all empty alcohol bottles. These will smell terrible in the morning when you wake all refreshed. Put them into the recycling bin immediately. Stopper any unfinished wine and store where appropriate. Pour unfinished beer in the garden and screw on the lids for liqueurs and spirits.
Remove all the dishes from the dining table.Either stack them neatly on the kitchen sink if the dishwasher is already full of cooking pans, or stack them directly into the dishwasher. Tackle the dishes in the sink if you're not too tired, as a clean bench space is far more inspirational than a pile of dirty dishes next morning.
Put away any food you are planning to keep.Refrigerate items that must be stored cold. This should be done during the course of the evening; judge whether an item has been left out too long to keep otherwise. Put nuts and nibbles back into their original bags or into airtight containers.
Throw napkins and tablecloth into the laundry area in readiness for washing.
Tidy the lounge space by removing any forgotten glasses, plates and nibbles.Plump up the cushions and straighten rugs, lamps, small tables etc. that were moved for the event. Let a little air in if possible.
Give the dining area and kitchen floors a quick sweep. You can use a micro-cloth cleaning apparatus if you have one - these will pick up things very quickly. If you are too tired to do this, at the very least wipe up spills and crumb piles and leave the sweeping to tomorrow.
Go to bed.You will probably sleep like a log. Well done!
QuestionHow should I clean up while people are still eating?wikiHow ContributorCommunity AnswerIt's best to wait until everyone is finished eating, but you could remove the empty dishes and put them in the kitchen. Wait until your guests have left to actually wash the dishes/clean up.Thanks!
- Spray a little air freshener just before you finish to give a last cleansing effect to your efforts.
- If guests smoked, throw out all ash remains and butts and clean the ashtrays.
- If you are the type of personality who works faster without help and finds help a little "in the way", have your helper sit and chat. It will still feel like help as they'll be keeping you awake and enthused but they won't be "in the way". Give them a glass of wine or a piece of leftover dessert to encourage them to keep to one side!
