How to Remove Echo from Audio

This wikiHow teaches you how to remove an echo from an audio file using Audacity, a free audio editor for Windows and Mac. When recording audio, sometimes the room you record in creates an echo or background noise. Most audio editors, such as Adobe Audition, have similar tools that can reduce echoes and background noise. These methods are most effective when used on a track with a single voice or instrument. Complex tracks with multiple voices or instruments will make it harder to isolate the background noise and remove it.

Steps

  1. Open Audacity. It's the app with the icon that resembles an audio waveform in between two blue headphones.
    • To download Audacity, visit and click the download link for your computer's operating system. Once downloaded, double-click the installer file and follow the prompts.
  2. Open the audio file.Audacity supports most audio formats, such as mp3, wav, aiff, flac, ogg, and ffmpeg. To open an audio file:
    • ClickFile
    • ClickOpen
    • Browse and select audio file.
  3. Apply Noise Reduction. To apply noise reduction, highlight the entire audio waveform by pressingCtrl+Aon PC, orCommand+Aon Mac. Then click "Effects" in the menu bar at the top, and select "Noise Reduction". Increase the noise reduction (dB) slider by dragging it to the left. This reduces echo and other background noises. Click "Preview" in the lower-left corner to hear what it sounds like. When you are satisfied that enough of the echo has been cut out, click "Ok" to apply the effect.
    • This will reduce the volume and alter the pitch of the audio
  4. Apply Amplify.Amplify increases the volume of the audio. It's at the top of the list of effects in the Effects menu at the top of Audacity. Drag the amplification slider bar to the left to increase the volume as needed. Do not increase the volume too much or it will sound distorted. Click "Preview" to hear what it sounds like. When you are satisfied with how the volume sounds, click "Ok" to apply the effect. Reapply Amplify as needed throughout this process.
  5. Apply Compressor.Compressor reduces the amount of distance between the wave peaks and lows. To apply compressor, click "Effects, and then click "Compressor" drag the slider bar next to "Ratio" so that the line in the graph at the top drops slightly below it's default position. You can also reduce the floor noise and threshold. Click "Preview" to hear what it sounds like. When you are satisfied with how it sounds, click "Ok" to apply the effect. This will reduce the volume. Apply Compressor as needed throughout this process.
  6. Apply a Low Pass or High Pass Filter.Depending on how your audio sounds, you may need to apply a low or high pass filter. If it sounds high pitched with a lot of hisses, apply a low pass filter. If it sounds low and muffled, apply a high pass filter. Both effects are found in the Effects menu. Use the pull-down menu to select the Rolloff (dB per octave) range. Your options are between 6 dB to 48 dB. Click "Preview" to hear what it sounds like, and click "Ok" to apply the effect.
  7. Apply Graphic EQ.To apply Graphic EQ, select Equalization in the Effects menu. Click on the Graphic radial button next to "EQ type" below the graph on the left side. Use the slider bars at the bottom to adjust the EQ. The bars on the left affect the low tones while the bars on the right effect the higher tones, and the bars in the middle effect the mid-tones. Click "Preview" to hear what it sounds like, and click "Ok" to apply the effect.
  8. Export the audio file.Once you are satisfied with how the audio file sounds, you can export it so that it can be played in your media player. To export the audio file:
    • ClickFilein the menu bar at the top.
    • SelectExport
    • ClickExport as MP3.
    • ClickSave.
  9. Save the project. If you plan editing the audio file more in the future, you should save the project. To save the project:
    • ClickFile. in the menu bar at the top.
    • ClickSave Project
    • ClickOkin the popup menu.
