Michelle Obama Just Released a New Song About Female Empowerment, and You Have to Hear It
Just a few days after President Obama facilitated the first-ever in the White House’s Rose Garden, Michelle Obama has released an epic girl-power anthem featuring an A-list team of female vocalists.
The song, titled “This Is for My Girls,” was played during the First Lady’s keynote address at the South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival on Wednesday, and features vocals from Missy Elliott, Zendaya, Kelly Clarkson, Lea Michele (ofGleefame), Janelle Monae, Kelly Rowland, Jadagrace and Chloe & Halle.
Oscar-nominated songwriter Diane Warren, who also penned “Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” and “Un-Break My Heart, wrote the track, which she has described as “We Are the World meets Lady Marmalade” in support of the Let Girls Learn initiative and the White House’s #62MillionGirls campaign, which aims to help girls worldwide finish their educations.

Michelle Obama teamed up with the Peace Corps to establish the Let Girls Learn initiative to help the 62 million girls across the globe who face barriers to completing their educations such as forced marriage, violence, unexpected pregnancy, and exposure to HIV/AIDS. The initiative provides support to community-led efforts to advance girls’ education and empowerment in countries where as few as 10 percent of teenage girls are able to complete secondary school.

The #62MillionGirls campaign supports initiatives like Let Girls Learn by raising awareness about these issues worldwide through storytelling, like the documentary film Girl Rising.
The artists involved in the making of “This is for My Girls” waived their fees, so all proceeds from the song will go directly to Let Girls Learn. The First Lady was joined in her keynote panel at SXSW by Diane Warren, Missy Elliott, actress Sophia Bush, and Queen Latifah.
"When was the last time you heard a song like this or a record that had this many amazing divas on it?” Songwriter Diane Warren asked during a recentBillboardinterview. “I'm really proud.”

"We haven't had an anthem like this in awhile," Warren continued. "I envisioned the record being with all these different women, never just one girl singing on it. With Kelly Rowland on it, it's almost like an updated Destiny's Child record. I think it can be a huge worldwide anthem. I hope it becomes that."
“This is for My Girls” will be available for download on iTunes at midnight on Wednesday.
