Food Trends That Will Blow Up In 2018

The biggest health food trends of 2019 have been revealed

From charcoal lattes to moon milk, our Instagram feeds have been inundated with more social media-worthy snaps of health foods than ever before this year.

But with the run-up to Christmas well underway, it leaves us wondering what's in store for our 2019 Pinterest board.

Thankfully, Whole Foods has unveiled its predictions with a definitive list of the gram-worthy items set to grace our shopping lists next year.

From avocado ice cream to seaweed butter, these are the items to keep an eye out for.

Pacific Rim flavours

According to the upmarket food chain, Pacific Rim flavours are set to dominate the shelves next year.

Heavily influenced by Asia, Oceania and the western coasts of North and South America - the likes of colourful fruits including guava, dragon fruit and passionfruit are set to replace goji berries.

Sugar and meat substitutes are also in the pipeline thanks to the rise in demand for jackfruit (which is regularly used to replace pulled pork) while luo han guo - a sweet-tasting fruit - is now used as a natural sweetener.

Probiotics

Although there is not yet enough evidence to support the health claims surrounding probiotics, the supplement is on the rise.

According to Whole Foods, wellness-focused brands are readily embracing the health movement with the launch of granolas, nut butters and soups all containing the widely-hailed product.

Hemp-based produce

CBD oil is gracing the headlines right now with increasing numbers of people trialling the hemp-based product in a bid to lessen the symptoms of anxiety.

So it comes as no surprise to learn that the industry is catching on with the food giant claiming: "Hemp-derived products are going mainstream, if not by wide distribution, then by word of mouth."

The rise of guilt-free frozen treats

From vegan choices to low-calorie tubs, ice cream has certainly been high on the agenda for health-conscious individuals on the hunt for a guilt-free treat in recent months.

Next year, the frozen food industry is set to grow even more with flavours such as avocado, houmous and tahini set to grace the supermarket shelves.

Plant-based foods

Courtesy of the rise in flexitarianism, plant-based foods are selling fast with increasing numbers of people turning their backs on meat.

Mushrooms are playing a big role in the market while egg white crisps are proving an increasingly popular snack.

Ocean-inspired flavours

Seaweed snacks have grown in popularity in recent years but this is just the beginning, Whole Foods reports.

According to the health-conscious company, other ocean-inspired greens such as seaweed butter and kelp noodles are set to become big news.

Puffed snacks made from water lily seeds, plant-based tuna alternatives with algae ingredients and crispy salmon skins packed with omega-3 are also on the agenda for 2019.

Healthy fats

High-fat (low-carb) diets are all the rage right now with fitness influencers hailing the benefits of the Keto and Paleo diet regimes.

On the back of the trend, Whole Foods predicts that consumers are set to embrace everything from coconut butter-filled chocolates to vegan coffee in a bid to embrace healthy fats.

Upgraded snack time

Whole Foods also predicts a rise in luxe snack time with an increasing desire for "portable snack packages".

These will feature bite-sized treats such as prosciutto and aged mozzarella while artisanal versions of the traditional cheese sandwich are also set to grow in popularity.

Upgraded retro treats will also find a place in our food cupboard next year with gluten free organic sweets and puffed rice treats made with organic sugar featuring in the line-up.

Eco-conscious packaging

But it's not just what we'll be eating next year which is set to change but our shopping habits.

Back in 2015, the UK government introduced a law requiring large shops across England to charge customers for all single-use carrier bags.

On the back of this, plans are in place to ban the distribution and sale of plastic straws, drinks stirrers and cotton buds by 2019.

Whole Foods predicts that there will be "an even bigger emphasis on reuse" next year with more shops embracing the 'BYOVB' (bring your own vegetable bag) campaign while others are introducing food wraps crafted from beeswax.
